US President Donald Trump announced that he will visit China in April following what he described as an “amazing” meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan, South Korea.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in their first face-to-face talks in six years, and the first since Trump began his second term in office.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I’ll be going to China in April and he’ll be coming here sometime after that, whether it’s in Florida, Palm Beach or Washington, DC.” The meeting came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing over trade, technology, and security.
Trump said the talks yielded several breakthroughs. “A lot of decisions were made,” he noted, announcing that China would immediately begin purchasing American soybeans and that both sides agreed to take action on key issues. He revealed that tariffs on Chinese goods will be reduced to 47% from 57% and that rare earth materials disputes had been “settled,” ensuring “no more roadblocks” to supply or trade.
The US President also said Xi had pledged to work hard to curb the flow of fentanyl into the United States, calling it a major step forward. Trump described the outcomes as “very positive,” saying he would soon provide details on “very important things” discussed during the summit.
Trump’s planned visit to China in April is expected to further advance trade cooperation and strengthen stability in relations between the world’s two largest economies.
