India resumes visas amid gradual thaw

Visa services between India and China had been halted after the 2020 border clashes. However, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on November 26 that tourist and business visas for Chinese nationals are now fully operational.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed this reopening during a weekly briefing. “Visas for tourists are being given to Chinese nationals and business visas were being given earlier. So you know, all those visas are now in place. The visa regime of tourism and business, etc, is fully functional,” he said.

India began issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals worldwide in November 2025, following a partial reopening that started in July 2025. Business visas had already resumed earlier and continue unchanged.

Part of confidence-building measures

The restoration of the visa regime comes under a set of “people-centric” confidence-building steps agreed upon by both countries in 2025. These initiatives also include the restart of direct commercial flights in October 2025 and the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra pilgrimage.

With online visa applications launching this month, travel between India and China is expected to further normalise after years of limited movement.
