Gov. Gavin Newsom’s memoir reveals his mother’s cancer-related decision to end her life, which shaped his support for assisted dying laws and led to making California’s End of Life Option Act permanent despite controversy.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has rarely spoken publicly about the day his mother chose to end her life. In his forthcoming memoir, he does so in deeply personal terms, describing a moment that left him grieving, angry and conflicted for years, the Washington Post reported.

In the spring of 2002, Newsom’s mother, Tessa Newsom, was dying of breast cancer. According to his account, she left him a voicemail telling him that if he wanted to see her again, it had to be before the following Thursday. That was the day she planned to end her life.

At the time, assisted suicide was illegal in California. Newsom, then a 34-year-old San Francisco supervisor, has said he did not try to dissuade her. He has described feeling guilt over being distant and consumed by work while her illness worsened and her pain intensified.

The final moments

When that Thursday arrived, Newsom and his sister sat beside their mother in her home as a doctor came to administer medication that would end her life. His sister eventually stepped out of the room. Newsom stayed.

He has recalled sitting with her body for 20 minutes after she died, resting his head on her stomach and waiting for another breath that never came. In interviews surrounding the release of his book, he has spoken candidly about how long it took him to process the experience. For years, he said, he struggled with anger at being asked to witness her last moments, even as he understood why she made the choice.

From personal loss to public policy

That experience now informs his political beliefs. Newsom has become a strong supporter of assisted dying laws, arguing that individuals facing unbearable suffering should have the freedom to decide for themselves.

California legalised physician-assisted dying in 2015 through the End of Life Option Act. As governor, Newsom later signed legislation reducing the waiting period for patients seeking life ending medication and eliminating certain procedural requirements. He also approved a measure making the law permanent.

The issue remains controversial nationwide. Assisted suicide is legal in a limited number of states and the District of Columbia, and it continues to draw opposition from religious groups and some disability rights advocates.

A potential presidential backdrop

Newsom has acknowledged that even within his own extended family there was anger over both his mother’s decision and his support for assisted dying legislation. He has said that watching her physical and mental decline left him convinced she would have endured needless suffering without that option.

The story surfaces at a time when speculation is growing about a possible presidential bid. Newsom has said his mother once warned him about the personal cost of political ambition. As he considers his future, he has suggested that her voice still echoes in his mind, shaping not only his views on end-of-life care but also how he thinks about power, responsibility and family.
