4.7-magnitude earthquake jolts Pakistan, third in three days

Earthquake of 4.7 magnitude strikes Pakistan

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan on Monday, marking the third tremor to hit the country in as many days, according to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre.

The quake’s epicenter was reported in the northern region, with tremors felt across several adjoining areas. No casualties or major damage have been reported so far. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, making the area susceptible to aftershocks.

In a post on X, the National Centre for Seismology said, "EQ of M: 4.7, On: 20/10/2025 11:12:08 IST, Lat: 30.51 N, Long: 70.41 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Pakistan."

Earthquakes of moderate 4.0 intensity had also hit Pakistan on Saturday and Sunday, sparking concern among residents and prompting officials to review preparedness measures in quake-prone zones. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines.

Shallow earthquakes can be more dangerous than deep ones since seismic waves from shallower quakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface, leading to stronger ground shaking and potentially greater damage.

Pakistan is among the most seismically active countries in the world, crossed by several major faults. Provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Sindh and Punjab sit on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate, contributing to frequent earthquake activity.

Balochistan, which lies near the active boundary between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates, has a long history of strong quakes, including the devastating 8.1-magnitude earthquake of 1945.
