The Vaishno Devi Yatra is more than just a pilgrimage—it is a spiritual calling and an enduring tradition for millions across India. Nestled in the serene Trikuta Hills of Jammu and Kashmir, the revered shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi draws devotees year-round. However, the recent terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which claimed 26 lives, has understandably raised serious concerns about the safety of pilgrims and tourists.
Travel Sentiment After the Pahalgam Attack
A survey conducted by the community social media platform LocalCircles gathered over 21,000 responses from travelers across 361 districts in India. Among 6,807 respondents who had travel plans to Kashmir between May and December 2025, 62 percent said they have already cancelled their trips, while only 38% remain committed to their plans.
Current Situation: What Pilgrims Should Know
The April 22 terror attack in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam has impacted tourism across Jammu & Kashmir, including the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra. Since the incident, there has been a noticeable decline in the number of daily visitors. This has affected local businesses that depend on the yatra for income.
Despite this, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) and authorities have ramped up security across the entire pilgrimage route:
1. High-security presence by CRPF and Jammu & Kashmir Police
2. 24x7 CCTV surveillance and real-time monitoring
3. Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) now fully operational
4. Strict verification of ponywallas, palanquin carriers, and porters, with registration cards issued by Katra SDM Piyush Dhotra and routine checks conducted by SMVDSB and police personnel
5. Authorities have reiterated that the pilgrimage remains safe, and thousands of devotees continue their spiritual journey to the sacred cave.
New Initiatives: Enhancing the Pilgrim Experience
To improve convenience and safety, the Shrine Board has launched several new services:
1. Smart Locker System: Introduced during Navratri, this facility received an encouraging response. It allows devotees to securely store personal belongings before the trek, adding convenience to the pilgrimage.
2. Langar Services: Over 50,000 pilgrims benefited from free meals during the nine-day Navratri period.
3. Focus on Cleanliness: Special attention was paid to hygiene and sanitation, enhancing the overall experience for pilgrims.
How to Reach Vaishno Devi
Reaching Vaishno Devi is a journey that blends modern convenience with spiritual tradition. Whether you prefer to travel by air, rail, road, or foot, multiple options are available to suit every pilgrim’s needs.
By Air: Fly into Jammu Airport, located around 50 km from Katra, the base camp for the yatra. Taxis, cabs, and state-run buses are readily available to take you to Katra.
By Train: The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station is well-connected to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Amritsar, offering a seamless rail journey.
By Road: Katra is well-connected to Jammu and other northern Indian cities via highways. You can choose to travel by private car or state transport buses.
On Foot: The actual yatra involves a 12 km uphill trek from Katra to Bhawan (the shrine). Devotees can walk, or opt for ponies, palkis (palanquins), or electric carts depending on their preference and physical ability.
Best Time to Visit Vaishno Devi
However, the horrifying killing of tourists in Kashmir by terrorists has made many travellers reconsider their plans. Safety is a crucial factor in tourism, and few are willing to take risks while on holiday. Going forward, both the central and state governments must implement stronger, long-term security measures if Kashmir is to reclaim its rightful share of tourism and the economic benefits that come with it.
Whether you’re undertaking the yatra for the first time or the fifth, let your journey be rooted in faith, thoughtful preparation, and trust in the systems that safeguard this sacred pilgrimage.
