On January 5, 2025, four adventurous tourists from Assam, including one woman, found themselves in a perilous situation when they fell through the icy surface of Sela Lake in Tawang district, Arunachal Pradesh. The group had been excited to explore the lake, located at a high altitude of 14,000 feet, despite the risks associated with walking on frozen bodies of water. Thankfully, quick thinking by their companions prevented a potential disaster as they were swiftly pulled out of the icy waters without any injuries.

The incident occurred around 10 am when the tourists ventured onto the lake’s frozen surface, ignoring the clear warning signs. "There was no casualty reported and all of them are fit and fine," confirmed Additional Deputy Commissioner Hakraso Kri.

Local authorities had long cautioned against walking on frozen lakes due to the dangerous conditions. Just last December, Tawang's Deputy Commissioner Kanki Darang issued advisories urging visitors to stay off high-altitude lakes like Sela Lake, Shongetser Lake, PT Tso Lake, and others near Bumla Pass due to the risks of thin or unstable ice.

These lakes are more than just tourist attractions for the local community; they hold deep spiritual and cultural significance. Traditional beliefs hold that disturbing or polluting these sacred waters can bring misfortune to those involved, urging visitors to approach these natural wonders with respect.

For tourists planning to visit these stunning frozen lakes, it’s essential to take safety precautions. Walking on ice may seem like an exciting adventure, but it can be extremely hazardous. Always seek guidance from experienced local guides who are familiar with the conditions of the lake and its surrounding terrain. Never venture out onto the ice alone or without proper equipment, and check with authorities before visiting, as weather conditions can change rapidly, making the ice even more unpredictable.

To ensure your safety, here are some essential tips for navigating frozen lakes, snow-covered roads, and avalanche-prone areas:

1. Walk Only with a Guide: Always explore frozen lakes with someone who knows the area and ice conditions. They can advise you on safe paths and avoid areas where the ice may be too thin.

2. Check Ice Thickness: If you do walk on frozen lakes, ensure the ice is at least 4-6 inches thick. Thinner ice is not safe and may crack under your weight.

3. Wear Proper Gear: Dress in layers to keep warm, and make sure your boots are suitable for walking on ice. Waterproof gear and warm clothing are essential.

4. Watch for Cracks: Avoid walking over visible cracks or areas where the ice appears slushy, as these could give way unexpectedly.

5. Stay Aware of Avalanche Risk: If you're venturing into mountainous terrain, be aware of avalanche risks. Stick to well-marked paths and check local avalanche reports before heading out.

6. Drive Carefully: Snow-covered roads can be extremely slippery. If you're driving, slow down and ensure your vehicle is equipped with winter tires or chains.

7. Carry Emergency Supplies: Always carry a first aid kit, emergency blanket, and extra food and water in case of unexpected delays or accidents.

8. Avoid Crowded Areas: While the beauty of places like Sela Lake is captivating, avoiding crowded spots reduces the risk of accidents, particularly when snow and ice conditions are unpredictable.

Sela Lake and other frozen lakes in the region are undoubtedly mesmerizing, but it’s vital to approach them with caution and respect for nature. With the right preparation and safety measures, you can enjoy the pristine beauty of Arunachal Pradesh’s frozen landscapes while ensuring your own safety and that of those around you. Respecting the local culture and traditions enhances the experience, allowing you to connect with the region in a meaningful way.
