Visit India's Hidden ‘Mini Thailand’

Tucked away in the folds of Himachal Pradesh’s lesser-travelled corners lies a dreamy escape that’s quietly earning the nickname ‘Mini Thailand’ — and for good reason. With its limestone rock formations, turquoise waters, lush tropical-style greenery, and offbeat vibe, this place offers a slice of Southeast Asia in the Indian Himalayas. Say hello to Sissu Waterfall Caves and Lagoon, a location that looks like it's been plucked straight from Krabi’s postcard views.

If Thailand feels too far or too expensive this year, this hidden Himachali haven just might be your perfect mountain-meets-tropic alternative.

What Makes This Place the ‘Mini Thailand’ of India?

The comparison isn’t exaggerated. The highlight of this destination is a secluded lagoon tucked behind a cluster of natural limestone caves just a short hike from the Sissu Waterfall — a spot that has recently caught the eye of intrepid travellers and Instagram explorers.

The emerald-blue water pool surrounded by overhanging rock cliffs bears an uncanny resemblance to Thailand’s iconic jungle lagoons and karst limestone formations. Add to that the gentle cascade of the waterfall nearby and the soft whisper of cool mountain air, and you’ve got yourself an otherworldly setting that’s hard to believe exists in Himachal.

Where Exactly Is It?

The Sissu region is located in Lahaul Valley, on the Manali-Leh highway, just beyond the Atal Tunnel. While Sissu itself has gained popularity for its scenic charm, apple orchards, and riverside beauty, the hidden caves and natural pool near the waterfall remain relatively unexplored by mainstream tourists.

It’s about 40 km from Manali and can be reached within 1.5 hours by road, making it perfect for a short day trip or a weekend escape from the usual hustle of Himachal hotspots.

How to Reach the ‘Mini Thailand’ Lagoon

  • By Road: From Manali, take the route through the Atal Tunnel toward Sissu. Once you reach Sissu village, locals can help direct you toward the waterfall trail.
  • The Hike: A short 15–20 minute forest walk (moderate difficulty) leads to the waterfall viewpoint. Continue a little further on an unmarked trail to reach the hidden lagoon and caves. A guide is recommended if you’re unfamiliar with the area.
  • Best Time to Visit: May to October is ideal, when the snow has melted and the trail is accessible.
