For nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, Mumbai's Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) has some exciting news. The park, already famous for its tiger and lion safaris, is set to introduce a leopard safari, offering a thrilling new experience to visitors. Located in the heart of the city’s Borivali area, SGNP is about to become even more of a must-visit destination.
On January 31, 2025, Ashish Shelar, Maharashtra’s Information Technology and Cultural Affairs Minister, and Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister, visited SGNP and announced the upcoming safari. This new attraction will allow visitors to safely observe rescued leopards in a natural setting, adding a unique touch to their experience at the park.
A Safari Like No Other
The leopard safari will take place on nearly 30 hectares of land within the park, which is already prepared for the project. The safari will give visitors the chance to see 17 leopards, including cubs that have been rehabilitated and given a second chance at life. SGNP’s director, G Mallikarjuna, explained that the goal of the safari is not only to entertain but also to educate visitors about leopard conservation and the importance of wildlife protection.
The project, which is expected to cost around Rs 5 crore, will be funded by both the forest department and the district planning committee. With SGNP already attracting around 20 lakh visitors a year, the addition of the leopard safari is expected to draw even more tourists, boosting the park's revenue while raising awareness about wildlife preservation.

A Focus on Animal Welfare
Currently, the park’s Leopard Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre doesn't allow visitors to see the leopards up close. But with the new safari, guests will have the opportunity to watch these stunning creatures in a safe and respectful environment. The park is committed to the welfare of the animals, ensuring that both the leopards and visitors can enjoy the experience safely.
Apart from the thrill of the safari, the experience will offer valuable insights into the efforts being made to conserve leopards and other wildlife. It's a chance to connect with nature and gain a deeper understanding of how we can all contribute to protecting our planet's creatures.
