Indian travellers embraced spontaneity like never before in 2024, with nearly half of them booking international flights at the eleventh hour. According to Niyo’s 2024 Travel Report, 48% of flights were booked within 0-7 days of travel, reflecting a growing trend toward impulsive getaways.
This shift has been fueled by greater accessibility, as 58 countries now offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry for Indian passport holders, simplifying last-minute international travel. Niyo also reported processing over 1,000 visa bookings monthly, indicating a balanced mix of spontaneity and planned travel.
Short Trips Dominate, But Long Holidays Find Space
The report highlights the popularity of short holidays, with 66% of trips lasting under seven days, while 17% of travellers opted for indulgent vacations of 15 days or more. Destinations like Dubai, Vietnam, and France topped the charts, with Dubai drawing 45% of Indian holidaymakers. Pop culture also played a role, inspiring Indian women to flock to France, while men favored Thailand’s vibrant beaches and nightlife.
A Focus on Safety and Comfort
The emphasis on safety saw 7,395 travel insurance policies sold in 2024, worth Rs 43.2 crores. Younger travellers led this trend, opting for coverage of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000. Meanwhile, 13% of travellers indulged in extras like pre-booked meals and additional baggage, reflecting a demand for comfort and personalization.
As Indians increasingly prioritize experiences and flexibility, this evolving travel mindset is shaping new trends in international tourism. With rising spontaneity and streamlined processes, 2024 marked a transformative year for Indian travellers.
