In a bid to enhance tourist safety, provide on-ground assistance, and promote responsible tourism, the Meghalaya government has rolled out a people-first initiative called the ‘Tourist Buddies’ program. Launched across four of the state's most visited destinations—Shillong, Sohra (Cherrapunji), Dawki, and Mawlynnong—this new program is designed to ensure travellers enjoy a seamless, informative, and secure experience while exploring the natural beauty of Meghalaya.
What is the Tourist Buddies Program?
The ‘Tourist Buddies’ scheme is a collaborative effort by the Meghalaya Department of Tourism and the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS). The initiative trains local youth to become tourism ambassadors, stationed at key hotspots to offer assistance, safety support, and cultural insight to tourists.
With professional training in hospitality, first aid, safety protocols, communication, and cultural awareness, these Tourist Buddies serve as friendly guides, local experts, and safety personnel, helping to bridge the gap between visitors and local authorities.
Where Will Tourist Buddies Be Deployed?
The first phase of the Tourist Buddies program will focus on four of Meghalaya’s most popular and frequently visited destinations:
1. Shillong – Celebrated for its pleasant climate, vibrant music culture, and stunning viewpoints.
2. Sohra (Cherrapunji) – Known for its record-breaking rainfall, mystical caves, and majestic waterfalls.
3. Dawki – Famous for the glass-like clarity of the Umngot River, attracting both thrill-seekers and leisure travellers.
4. Mawlynnong – Often referred to as Asia’s Cleanest Village, it’s a model of eco-tourism and sustainable living.
These Tourist Buddies will be stationed at major tourist attractions, including Laitlum Canyon, Ward’s Lake, Mawsmai and Arwah Caves, Krangsuri Waterfalls, and several other key locations. They’ll provide travel assistance, ensure safety compliance, and offer local insights to make every visitor’s journey smooth and memorable.
Why Meghalaya's Tourist Buddies Program is a Game-Changer
With Meghalaya seeing a surge in domestic and international tourism, the state has also encountered challenges such as overcrowding, environmental strain, and tourist mismanagement. The Tourist Buddies program directly addresses these concerns by:
This initiative not only boosts the visitor experience but also creates meaningful employment opportunities for local youth. Training is being conducted by NIT Meghalaya, focusing on essential skills like navigation, cultural etiquette, basic first aid, and hospitality.
By empowering locals and integrating them into the tourism value chain, the scheme builds community pride and encourages locals to take active ownership of preserving their culture and environment.
Promoting Responsible & Sustainable Travel in Northeast India
As Meghalaya continues to attract nature lovers, trekkers, and explorers, this initiative aligns with the state's broader push toward eco-conscious and sustainable tourism. The Tourist Buddies will help monitor tourist behavior, promote environmental awareness, and report any illegal or damaging activity.
This move highlights Meghalaya's commitment to protecting its natural heritage while ensuring that visitors feel safe, informed, and welcome.
The Tourist Buddies program is more than just a tourism initiative—it’s a thoughtful integration of local knowledge, hospitality, and safety into the travel experience. Whether you’re hiking to a hidden waterfall or strolling through the clean streets of Mawlynnong, your journey in Meghalaya just became more insightful, meaningful, and secure.
