Local travel, food tourism, and AI-powered planning are set to redefine how Asia explores in 2026, according to a new report.

Asia is rewriting its travel playbook for 2026—and the shift is bigger, bolder, and more exciting than anyone expected. Local adventures, culinary journeys, budget-smart planning, and AI-powered travel tools are set to dominate the way millions of people explore next year.

According to the 2026 Travel Outlook Report released by digital travel platform Agoda, based on surveys across nine major Asian markets, travellers are placing greater value on meaningful experiences closer to home, unforgettable food cultures, affordable getaways, family bonding, and smart digital assistance. As per reports, this evolving mindset reflects a dramatic change from previous years when long-haul vacations and luxury escapes ruled travel aspirations.

The survey, conducted among 3,353 respondents from India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, reveals that Asia’s travel trends are becoming more personal, experiential, and financially conscious. Travellers are prioritising emotional connection and cultural immersion over distance and extravagance, signalling a new era for tourism across the region.

Here are the top five trends set to shape travel in Asia in 2026:

1. Home is where the adventure begins: domestic travel takes centre stage

If 2026 needs a travel slogan, it would be: “Why fly far when magic is right here?”

More than a third of Asian travellers (35%) now plan to explore within their own countries—more than double last year’s numbers. As per reports, this trend isn’t about repeating familiar trips. Instead, travellers are seeking out lesser-known coastal towns, mountain hamlets, remote islands, cultural villages, and nature escapes that feel fresh and undiscovered. Japan and Thailand are driving this movement, with 67% and 66% of respondents planning domestic travel, proving that homegrown adventures are becoming the new travel luxury.

2. Travellers are following their taste buds around the world

Food is no longer just part of the journey—it is the journey.

Culinary travel has surged into the top three motivations for Asian travellers, jumping from sixth place last year. From slurping ramen in Tokyo’s hidden alleyways to exploring Vietnamese street food markets and hunting for the perfect Korean barbecue, travellers are shaping their itineraries around flavours and food culture.

Taiwanese, Vietnamese, and South Korean travellers lead the culinary wave, with nearly half of Taiwan’s respondents citing food as a key travel driver. Expect a boom in food festivals, cooking classes, speciality dining tours, and Michelin-recognised street food trips across the region.

3. Nothing beats a great deal for the budget-savvy traveller

In 2026, the smartest traveller isn’t the one who spends big—it’s the one who spends wisely.

Two in five travellers plan to allocate 6–10% of their income to travel, making budgeting crucial. Price now outweighs location and reviews when booking accommodation, with 39% prioritising cost above all else. As per reports, travellers in Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia are leading the budget-conscious trend, with many seeking stays under $50 per night.

Expect the rise of affordable boutique hotels, homestays, eco-lodges, capsule stays, and irresistible bundled deals that maximise value without compromising experience.

4. Frequent family trips shape 2026 travel plans

Long vacations are losing ground to multiple shorter escapes.

About 35% of respondents plan 4–6 trips in 2026, focusing on quality family moments without lengthy work or school breaks. Microtravel—1–3 day trips—is also booming, with 32% embracing quick getaways to nearby nature spots, heritage towns, or coastal retreats.

Indonesian travellers stand out, planning the most trips and longest travel periods, with 32% aiming for 11 or more trips next year. Weekend breaks and staycations will continue shaping Asian travel culture.

5. AI steps up as the new travel essential

Move over guidebooks and travel blogs—AI is becoming the region’s smartest travel sidekick.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents (63%) say they’ll use AI to plan trips, relying on it to recommend local attractions, translate languages, and create customised itineraries. As per reports, AI tools are helping travellers plan faster, find better deals, and tailor experiences to personal preferences—all with minimal effort.

With millions of properties, flight routes, and activities available in one place, platforms are gearing up to support this new era of smart, efficient, and personalised travel.

What this means for 2026 travel

Asia’s 2026 travel landscape is shaping up to be more local, authentic, and experience-driven. Travellers will favour road trips, regional escapes, and food-led itineraries, while keeping a sharp eye on value. Short family trips and microtravel will become the norm, supported by AI-powered inspiration and planning tools that make travel smoother than ever.

Whether you're craving a foodie adventure, a quick family escape, or a budget-friendly getaway planned with AI, 2026 promises a travel season full of fresh possibilities—and Asia is leading the charge.
