China is set to make history with the opening of the world’s tallest bridge, scheduled for June 2025. The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, located in Guizhou province, is a remarkable feat of engineering and a testament to China's infrastructure development.
Standing at an impressive 2,051 feet above the river, this bridge will surpass the current tallest bridge, the Millau Viaduct in France, by a staggering 947 feet. Guizhou, known for its rugged, mountainous terrain, provides a challenging yet exciting location for this ambitious project. The bridge will span the Huajiang Grand Canyon, often referred to as the "earth crack," showcasing the dramatic natural landscape.
This project is part of China’s ongoing push to enhance infrastructure, particularly in underdeveloped regions like Guizhou, which lies 800 miles west of Shenzhen. While the bridge is set to break records, it also serves a practical purpose: it will significantly cut travel time across the Huajiang Grand Canyon, reducing the journey from two hours to just one minute. This will provide a major boost for the transportation of goods and services through the area.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is a steel truss suspension bridge measuring 9,482 feet in total length. Construction began on January 18, 2022, with an official completion date expected by June 30, 2025. Once completed, the structure will support nearly 22,000 tons of steel, equivalent to three Eiffel Towers.
With 95% of construction complete, the bridge is expected to open to traffic in the second half of 2025. Zhang Shenglin, Chief Engineer of Guizhou Highway Group, remarked that this monumental project will be a major milestone for China’s infrastructure capabilities.
Guizhou, already home to nearly half of the world’s top 100 tallest bridges, continues to be a hub of cutting-edge engineering and development.
