Chefchaouen is an international sensation in the Rif Mountains, located in the northern part of Morocco and is referred to as the Blue Pearl. With its twisting streets, blue-washed walls and mountainous background, this is a very photogenic town in the world.

A City Painted in Blue
Chefchaouen is unique with its thousands of shades. It is painted in shades of indigo and pale sky blue, which brings a relaxing effect to the medina (old town). The etymology of the tradition is controversial; some believe it started with Jewish refugees in the 15th century, others think the blue symbolises the sky and spirituality, and locals believe it has a practical purpose of keeping the mosquitoes at bay.

Exploring the Medina
Chefchaouen is a blue-washed house with narrow cobbled streets winding through the medina, which is the heart of the place and filled with artisan shops and cafes. Tourists may purchase handwoven blankets, pottery and leatherware, and other local crafts, many offered at the craftspeaker level.

Historical and Cultural Influences
Chefchaouen was established to serve as a fortification to keep the Portuguese invasions at bay. In due course, it hosted the Muslims, Jews, and Andalusian refugees, and the town has a distinctive cultural heritage. A local history, arts and traditions museum is found in the medina, the Kasbah.

Nature and Adventure in the Rif Mountains
On top of its medina, Chefchaouen is the gateway to the Rif Mountains. The hikers also have an opportunity to go to the waterfall, the valley, and traditional Berber village trails. A well-known hiking trail is a visit to the Akchour Waterfalls, which is approximately 45 minutes out of town.

Culinary Delights
Chefchaouen has traditional Moroccan food like tagines and couscous, and harira, which is usually offered with local flavour. For people who like their travelling slow, spending hours at the cafe on the street, having mint tea is one of the most memorable experiences of their life in the country.

A Calming Alternative
Unlike in the overcrowded tourist destinations in Morocco, Chefchaouen is characterised by a relaxing atmosphere, borderline meditation. Be it exploring the medina, climbing the surrounding mountain, hiking, or just spending time soaking in the shades of blue, the city provides a visual and spiritual experience that is enriching.

The Allure of the Blue Pearl
The beauty, culture and calmness are elements that make Chefchaouen beautiful. It is not only the blue painted city but the place where history, nature and tradition meet. The Blue Pearl of Morocco is a beautiful jewel in the Rif Mountains, which cannot be overlooked by travellers looking to find a destination that is highly photogenic and, at the same time, very authentic.
