Canadian permanent residency gives not only long-term settlement in Canada, but also international travel benefits. By October 2025, PR holders will be able to travel to almost 30 countries and territories without pre-applying to obtain a visa. This advantage has made Canadian citizenship ever more appealing to individuals who appreciate travelling the globe.

The visa-free privilege is most evident in the Caribbean and Latin America, where several destinations welcome Canadian PR holders to make brief visits. Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Belize and even the Dominican Republic have free entry without a visa, along with a generous stay period of 30 to 180 days. Canadian PR holders are also welcome in popular island destinations such as the Bahamas, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, and the Dutch Caribbean territories, with very few formalities. Central American countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador have easy accessibility to those in need of culture and history.

It is not just beneficial to the Americas. Asian PR holders with Canada are allowed to enter South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Qatar without a visa, and usually spend between 30 and 90 days. Other nations that allow easy entry can be found in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus: Georgia, Armenia, Moldova, and Kosovo. Short trips locally are much easier, even within the Canadian neighbourhood, where the adjacent French land of Saint Pierre and Miquelon is available without extra paperwork.

It is noteworthy, though, that free entry without a visa does not imply free travel. There is no limit to the maximum stay, and the regulations tend to differ depending on the nationality and the passport that a Canadian PR holder has. The destination might also insist on evidence of further travel, a reserve in a hotel, or adequate funds to last the trip. Even where a visa is not needed, a visitor card will still be needed, such as in Cuba. Travellers should also observe the restrictions on stay, as overstaying may influence subsequent entries.

To Canadian PR holders, this has been a boon as the list of available destinations increases their ease of movement and the ability to explore different cultures without the bureaucracy. It could be enjoying the Caribbean beaches, venturing in European cities or visiting the modern centres of Asia, but the freedom to move around is a good bonus that underscores the global advantage of having a permanent Canadian residence.
