Aralam Sanctuary’s lush forest canopy prepares to become Kerala’s first butterfly haven.

The Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, nestled in the verdant folds of the Western Ghats, is poised to earn a new title—Kerala’s first official butterfly sanctuary. A proposal from the State Forest Department to rename it as the Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary is under consideration and will likely be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the State Board for Wildlife, as per reports. If approved, this would mark a historic first for the state: a sanctuary dedicated solely to the conservation and study of butterflies.

A Natural Haven for Winged Wonders

Located in Kannur district, Aralam is the only wildlife sanctuary in the region and a magnet for ecotourism enthusiasts. Spread over 55 square kilometers of tropical and semi-evergreen forest, it offers an unspoiled retreat for nature lovers. What makes Aralam truly special, however, is its astonishing butterfly biodiversity. Every December, the forest comes alive with the flutter of migrating Common Albatross butterflies, many of which are endemic to the Western Ghats.

A Sanctuary Since 1984, A Butterfly Reserve in the Making

Established in 1984, Aralam has long held the attention of butterfly watchers and conservationists. Since 2000, the State Forest Department, in collaboration with the Malabar Natural History Society, has conducted annual butterfly surveys here. One of the most anticipated events in the sanctuary’s calendar is the Butterfly Migration Study, usually held in January or February, which draws enthusiasts from across India. Aralam has become the base camp for documenting this natural marvel in the state.

266 Butterfly Species—and Counting

According to Mathrubhumi, Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is home to an impressive 266 butterfly species—over 80% of the total 327 species recorded in Kerala. This includes both resident and migratory species, making Aralam one of the richest butterfly habitats in the region. The sanctuary is also renowned for hosting the seasonal migration of Albatross and Danaine butterflies, further underscoring its ecological significance.

A Milestone for Conservation

If the proposal is approved, the new designation of Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary would not only recognize its rich biodiversity but also help draw attention to the conservation needs of these delicate pollinators. With increased focus, funding, and research, the move could serve as a model for other butterfly-rich ecosystems in India.

For nature lovers, researchers, and photographers, Aralam’s possible transformation into a dedicated butterfly sanctuary promises a future filled with fluttering color and conservation success.
