Industrialist Anand Mahindra has once again turned the spotlight on a lesser-discussed Indian gem—this time, a centuries-old temple in Kerala that blends science, spirituality and stunning architecture in a way that feels almost unreal.
Known for sharing thoughtful travel discoveries on social media, Mahindra recently posted about the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram—and it’s quickly caught the attention of travellers and culture enthusiasts alike.
A temple where science meets spirituality
Sharing a video of the shrine, Anand Mahindra wrote: "In Thiruvananthapuram stands the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, where architecture meets astronomy. On equinoxes, the setting sun aligns precisely with the temple's structure, appearing through a sequence of windows in timed intervals, an event often described as 'Suryasmaranam'.”

What he’s referring to is a rare and fascinating celestial alignment. During the equinox—an astronomical event that happens twice a year when day and night are nearly equal—the setting sun lines up perfectly with the temple’s design. As sunlight filters through a series of windows at timed intervals, the effect is both precise and visually striking.
‘Built centuries ago, yet so advanced’
Mahindra didn’t stop at admiration. He reflected on how the temple represents a time when science and spirituality worked hand in hand.
"Built centuries ago, but it reflects a sophisticated understanding of solar movement, geometry and orientation. Comforting that science and spirituality weren't separate pursuits. They coexisted and often reinforced each other. I'm putting this firmly on my own urgent bucket list: to be there on one of the two equinox days. I missed the spring equinox just this past Friday. But I have two chances every year. Calendar marked."
His post has sparked fresh curiosity about the temple—especially among travellers looking for meaningful, offbeat experiences.
What makes this temple so special
Located within the historic East Fort area, the temple is not just a place of worship—it’s a symbol of Kerala’s rich cultural and architectural heritage. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his reclining form as Anantha Padmanabha, it is also one of the revered Divya Desams in Vaishnavism.
With origins believed to trace back to at least the 8th century, the temple brings together elements of traditional Kerala and Dravidian architecture. From detailed murals and sculptures to the iconic reclining Vishnu idol, every corner tells a story. Visitors first encounter its imposing seven-tier gopuram, which leads into expansive corridors lined with 365 finely carved pillars, each showcasing intricate craftsmanship.
Inside, the main deity is crafted using 12,008 sacred stones sourced from Nepal’s Gandaki River. Another highlight is the Navagraha Mandapa, where the ceiling features detailed carvings representing the nine planets.
Often described as one of the richest temples in the world, it carries both spiritual and historical significance.
How to reach
Reaching the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is fairly easy, thanks to its central location in Thiruvananthapuram and good connectivity across air, rail and road networks. Here’s how you can get there:
By air: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (around 5 km away)
By train: Thampanoor Railway Station (around 1.4 km away)
By bus: Thampanoor Bus Stand (around 1.7 km away)
Why it’s trending now
Mahindra’s post has done what it often does—bring a quiet but extraordinary place into the spotlight. At a time when travellers are seeking deeper, more meaningful journeys, destinations like the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple offer more than just sightseeing—they offer a story, a connection, and in this case, even a glimpse of ancient scientific brilliance.
And if Mahindra’s “urgent bucket list” is anything to go by, timing your visit with the next equinox might just make the experience even more unforgettable.
