The oil and power ministry are seeking financial aid for stranded gas-based power plants.

Piyush Goyal, who is the Minister of State for Coal and Power, exuded confidence that mines that would be auctioned would adequately satisfy the needs of existing power plants.

Stating that power is going to drive the economy, Goyal said that government will focus on long-term bankable Power Purchase Agreement (PPAs) for renewable energy. He expects power demand to double in next five years.

About 1 lakh megawatt capacity of the private sector is under stress and these entail investment of about Rs 8 lakh crore and banks have an exposure of about Rs 5 lakh crore.

In the current financial year the coal requirement for the power sector alone is about 433 mt whereas Coal India has set a target of 408 mt.

At current market valuations, Coal India divestment would fetch the exchequer Rs 23,600 crore.
