The SC verdict was seen as clearing the way for Palaniswami, engaged in a leadership tussle with rival O Panneerselvam, to be elevated to the organisation's top rank.
He has served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu three times—2001–2002, 2014–2015, and briefly in 2016—mostly during times of political transition within the AIADMK.
After Jayalalithaa's death in 2016, Panneerselvam initially became Chief Minister but later staged a public rebellion against V. K. Sasikala's attempt to take over the party, citing moral and legal concerns.
OPS started his political career as a local body representative and rose through the AIADMK ranks to become a trusted aide of Jayalalithaa. He has been an MLA from Bodinayakanur and Periyakulam constituencies over the years.
Due to internal conflicts and leadership disputes with Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Panneerselvam was expelled from key posts in the AIADMK in 2022. However, he continues to maintain his political identity and influence.
