YouTube gets new AI-Overview like feature to make it easier for users to find the right videos and insights

Google is expanding its AI features within its app, and this time it's YouTube. The search engine giant has now added a new AI Overview-like feature on YouTube that aims to enhance how users find and interact with videos using artificial intelligence.

With two major AI-based upgrades now rolling out, the platform now offers streamlined video discovery and provides more contextual answers directly within the app. These features are part of YouTube’s broader push to integrate smart tools that improve user experience.

AI search carousel for faster video discovery
The first major update is an AI-powered search results carousel in the YouTube mobile app. When users search for topics related to activities, locations, or shopping, such as “best workout routines” or “things to do in Mumbai”,—a scrollable carousel appears below the search bar. This carousel includes video snippets accompanied by short AI-generated descriptions that explain their relevance.

Users can tap directly into the part of the video that matches their interest or view a curated list of videos related to their query. This feature helps surface more targeted and helpful content quickly, similar to Google’s AI Overview on Search.

Currently, the AI carousel is available only to Premium subscribers in the United States. YouTube hasn’t announced when or if the feature will be available to a global audience or free-tier users.

YouTube is also expanding access to its conversational AI assistant, launched last year for Premium members. This chatbot allows viewers to ask questions about a video in real time, receive summaries, or get video suggestions—all without leaving the video player.

In the coming weeks, the tool will be gradually rolled out to select non-Premium users in the U.S., with a broader release likely depending on user feedback.
