YouTube, Google’s video streaming platform, faced a major global outage on Thursday morning, affecting millions of users. According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, more than 340,000 reports were logged at around 5:23 AM (IST), marking one of the largest disruptions to the service in recent months. The issue appears to have impacted users across multiple countries simultaneously, including India, the US, and the UK.
Issues users are facing
Reports on Downdetector indicate that 56 percent of users experienced problems with video streaming, 32 percent faced issues with the YouTube mobile app, and 12 percent reported problems accessing the website. Several users said videos were not loading, search results were failing to appear, and comments were not displaying correctly. Some reported being signed out of their accounts or receiving error messages while trying to load the homepage.
On social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), the hashtag #YouTubeDown began trending soon after the outage began, with users sharing screenshots of error pages and expressing frustration over the sudden disruption. Creators also reported being unable to upload or schedule new videos during the downtime.
What Downdetector data shows
The Downdetector outage graph shows a sharp rise in problem reports beginning around 5:00 AM IST, peaking at over 340,000 reports within a short span. The baseline level of reports is typically under 50, highlighting the scale of this disruption.
Current status
As of now, YouTube has not issued an official statement acknowledging the outage or specifying the cause. However, many users have reported partial restoration of services in the past hour. Google’s support teams are expected to release an update once systems are fully operational.
This incident adds to a growing list of global outages experienced by major online services this year, underscoring the scale and complexity of maintaining uninterrupted digital infrastructure.
