YouTube is making its more affordable subscription plan a lot more useful. The company has announced two much-awaited features for YouTube Premium Lite users in India and other markets—background play and offline downloads.

For a long time, Premium Lite was seen as a basic version of YouTube Premium. It removed most ads, but missed out on key features that many users actually care about. That is now changing.

With this update, Premium Lite subscribers will finally be able to play videos in the background. This means you can listen to podcasts, interviews, or even music videos while using other apps or when your phone screen is off. It’s a simple feature, but one that makes a big difference, especially for people who use YouTube more for listening than watching.

The second big addition is offline downloads. Users can now download videos and watch them later without needing an internet connection. This is especially useful for people who travel often or deal with patchy network connections. You can save videos over Wi-Fi or mobile data and watch them anytime, anywhere.

Both features were earlier limited to the full YouTube Premium plan, which made Premium Lite feel a bit restricted despite being cheaper. With these additions, the Lite plan now feels like a more complete package for users who want better control over how they watch content without paying for the full subscription.

That said, Premium Lite still doesn’t include everything. Features like YouTube Music Premium—such as ad-free music streaming and audio-only playback in the YouTube Music app—are still reserved for full Premium subscribers. So, if you are someone who mainly uses YouTube for music, the regular Premium plan might still make more sense.

As of now, YouTube has not announced any change in pricing for Premium Lite. In India, the plan is priced at Rs. 89 per month, making it one of the most affordable paid options on the platform. In comparison, the standard YouTube Premium plan starts at Rs. 149 per month, with higher-priced family and multi-user options also available.

The new features are expected to roll out over the next few weeks. Overall, this move makes YouTube Premium Lite a much stronger option for users who want fewer ads along with useful playback features, without spending too much.
