You can now change your @gmail.com address and here’s how to do it

Changing your Gmail address can be confusing because Google treats your email address as your account identity. Unlike profile details, email usernames follow fixed rules. Here’s a clear guide explaining when changes are possible, how to do it, and what to keep in mind before proceeding.

  • Gmail address changes depend on account type and Google’s edit options
  • Most @gmail.com addresses cannot be changed directly
  • Deleting Gmail lets you use a non-Gmail email for your Google Account

Changing a Gmail address is possible, but it depends on how your Google Account is set up. Google allows users to switch, replace, or update the email used for their account in specific situations. Here is a complete, step-by-step guide explaining how Gmail address changes work and what users should know before proceeding.

Your Gmail address is the main identifier for your Google Account. It appears next to your profile photo when you are signed in and is used to sign in, receive security alerts, and get important updates from Google services. Unless a contact email is added separately, this address remains the primary point of communication.

Step 1: Check if your Gmail address can be changed

To see whether your Gmail address can be changed:

Sign in to your Google Account on a computer

Open Personal info from the left menu

Select Email

Click Google Account email

If this option cannot be opened or edited, your email address cannot be changed directly. In most cases, Gmail addresses ending with @gmail.com are not editable, while non-Gmail addresses may be changed.

For work or school accounts, the administrator controls whether changes are allowed.

Step 2: Change your Google Account email (where allowed)

If the edit option is available:

Click Edit next to your email address

Enter a new email address that is not already linked to another Google Account

Follow the on-screen instructions

Open the verification email sent to the new address

Confirm the change by clicking the verification link

The new email becomes your primary sign-in address once verified.

How to switch from a Gmail address to another email

If you want to stop using a Gmail address and sign in with a non-Gmail email, Google requires you to delete the Gmail service from your account. This does not delete your Google Account, but the Gmail address itself is permanently removed and cannot be recovered.

After deleting Gmail, you can add a non-Gmail email address as your primary account email.

What to do if you can’t change your Gmail address

If direct change is not possible, users can:

Add an alternate email for sign-in

Check emails from other accounts inside Gmail

Create a new Google Account with a different Gmail address

Important things to know before changing your email

Changing your account email may affect:

Websites using “Sign in with Google”

Chrome Remote Desktop access

Account recovery and security settings

Some third-party services may require manual account recovery.
