X will now reveal which country users are from as new transparency feature rolls out

X is not the first social network to provide this level of transparency to users. Instagram has long offered a similar “About this account” feature, for instance.

Elon Musk’s X has begun introducing a new transparency tool on user profiles that reveals key details about an account’s history and origin. The feature, called “About this account”, surfaces information such as the user’s location, the number of times their username has been changed, the original join date and how the X app was downloaded. It is designed to help people spot inauthentic behaviour on a platform where bots frequently mimic real users and where AI-driven manipulation is becoming harder to detect.

The company first flagged the feature in October when Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, said it would begin testing the display on his profile and those of X employees. The intention is simple: give people enough contextual information to judge whether an account is legitimate or attempting to spread misinformation. For example, if an account claims to be based in a U.S. state but its profile location shows activity from overseas, users may have reason to question its motives.

Over the past few days, more users have reported seeing the feature appear on their own profiles after Bier responded to a request for stricter transparency with a promise to deliver within 72 hours. Accessing the panel is straightforward. On the web and mobile app, tapping the “Joined” date takes users to a page listing join date, base location, username-change history and the app source, such as the US App Store or Google Play.

However, the rollout remains limited. TechCrunch notes that while many users can view their own information, the same panel is not yet visible on other profiles. X appears to be giving people time to verify the accuracy of their data and adjust privacy controls. Users can choose whether to show their country or a broader region, a setting located under Privacy and Safety. Instagram already offers a comparable transparency feature, making X the latest platform to adopt this approach.
