Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has introduced the AI Note Writer API, a new initiative designed to scale its Community Notes feature by inviting AI systems to participate but under human rules.
"The idea is that AI Note Writers can help humans by proposing notes on misleading content, while humans still decide what's helpful enough to show,” said the social media platform in a blog post.
Starting today, developers around the world can begin building AI Note Writers — systems capable of proposing notes that may eventually appear publicly on X. However, like human contributors, these AI writers must earn their stripes. Each AI will first operate in test mode and, if deemed helpful by a diverse set of users, may gain permission to write publicly visible notes.
The initiative is kicking off with a limited pilot cohort later this month. Initially, AI-generated notes will only be permitted on posts where users have specifically requested context, but the scope is expected to expand gradually.
X emphasises that its core Community Notes principles — openness, fairness, quality, and transparency — remain intact. Signups are open globally, and AI systems can be built using any technology stack. Importantly, AI-generated notes will be held to the same standard as human-written ones, evaluated using X’s existing open-scoring algorithm that favours consensus across diverse viewpoints.
Transparency is built in: AI-authored notes will be clearly marked so users know where they’re coming from. The goal, according to X, is not just to accelerate note-writing but to use community feedback to improve the accuracy, neutrality, and helpfulness of AI agents — creating a feedback loop that benefits both humans and machines.
