X hints at edited image labels but leaves key questions unanswered

Elon Musk has hinted that X may be working on a new system to label edited or altered images, though the company has offered little clarity on how the feature would actually work. The speculation follows a brief and cryptic post from Elon Musk that read “Edited visuals warning”, shared alongside an announcement from the anonymous X account DogeDesigner.

DogeDesigner is frequently used as an unofficial channel for previewing new X features, with Musk often amplifying its posts. In this case, the account claimed that X was rolling out a feature designed to make it harder for legacy media organisations to circulate misleading images or clips. Beyond that assertion, however, no technical or policy details were provided, leaving users to guess how X plans to identify and label manipulated media.

This lack of transparency is notable because X has dealt with similar issues before. Prior to its acquisition and rebranding, Twitter had a policy that labelled tweets containing manipulated, deceptively altered, or fabricated media rather than removing them outright. That approach was not limited to AI-generated content. In 2020, former head of site integrity Yoel Roth said the policy covered selective editing, cropping, slowed footage, overdubbing, and manipulated subtitles.

Whether X is reviving that framework, modifying it for the age of generative AI, or introducing something entirely new remains unclear. X’s current help documentation still references a policy against sharing inauthentic media, but enforcement has been inconsistent. Recent incidents involving the spread of non-consensual deepfake images highlight how uneven moderation has become, while even official government accounts, including the White House, have shared manipulated visuals without labels.

The distinction between edited media, AI-assisted edits, and fully AI-generated images is increasingly blurred. That nuance matters, particularly on a platform that plays a significant role in political discourse and propaganda, both domestically and internationally. Without clear definitions, users have no way of knowing what qualifies as “edited” under X’s proposed system, or whether there will be any appeals process beyond the platform’s crowdsourced Community Notes.

Other platforms have already learned how difficult this problem is. When Meta introduced AI image labels in 2024, its detection systems repeatedly misfired, incorrectly tagging genuine photographs as “Made with AI”. The issue stemmed from the growing integration of AI-powered features into mainstream creative software. Common tools such as Adobe’s cropping and generative fill functions were enough to trigger Meta’s detectors, even when the final image was largely authentic.

As a result, Meta softened its approach and replaced the “Made with AI” tag with a more ambiguous “AI info” label, acknowledging that certainty was often impossible. Similar challenges face X if it attempts to automate image labelling without detailed provenance data.

There are already industry-wide efforts aimed at solving this problem. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, known as C2PA, is developing standards to embed tamper-evident metadata into digital content. Related initiatives such as the Content Authenticity Initiative and Project Origin pursue similar goals. Major players including Microsoft, the BBC, Adobe, Arm, Intel, Sony, OpenAI, and others sit on the C2PA steering committee, while platforms like Google Photos have begun surfacing this data to users.

Notably, X is not currently listed as a C2PA member. Musk has not indicated whether the platform plans to adopt any of these standards, nor has he clarified whether the teased feature targets AI-generated images specifically or any image altered after capture. Even the claim that the feature is entirely new remains unverified.
