Smart scales have evolved beyond simply telling you how much you weigh, and the Withings Body Scan sits at the extreme end of that shift. Priced at Rs 38,000, this is not a typical bathroom scale you step on for a quick reading and move on. Instead, it positions itself as a more comprehensive health device, combining weight tracking with detailed body composition analysis and cardiovascular metrics.

At first glance, it looks similar to other premium scales, but the addition of a wired handle changes how you use it entirely. The Body Scan doesn’t just record your weight — it attempts to break it down, measuring fat and muscle distribution across different parts of your body while also tracking metrics like heart rate and vascular age.

That ambition comes with a different kind of user experience and whether you should invest in it or not? Let’s find out in the detailed review.

Design and setup

The Body Scan looks familiar at first glance, but the handle changes how you interact with it. It’s not just an accessory — it’s central to how the device captures segmented body composition and cardiovascular data. The included wall mount for the handle adds some practicality, though it also signals that this is a more involved product than most smart scales.

Setting it up follows a standard app-based process. You download the Withings app, create an account, and enter personal details like height, weight, age, and assigned sex. The scale connects over Wi-Fi, and the pairing process is straightforward, with a confirmation code displayed on the unit.

The app supports integration with services like Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Samsung Health, and Strava, which helps if you’re already tracking fitness data across platforms and also keep all the important data stored in one place.

It is a different kind of weighing scale

The key differentiator here is the range of metrics. The Body Scan goes beyond weight and body fat percentage. It attempts to map your body in segments — arms, legs, and torso — measuring fat and muscle distribution across each area.

In addition, it includes ECG functionality, electrodermal activity tracking (linked to stress levels), heart rate monitoring, and vascular age estimation. These are not features typically associated with a weighing scale, and their inclusion changes how you approach daily use.

This is not a device you step on casually. It asks for attention.

To get accurate readings, you need to follow specific guidelines. Bare, dry feet need to be placed correctly on the scale. The handle must be held with proper grip, arms extended slightly away from the body.

During testing, the scale registered the readings and body segments properly almost all the time. Once the process is followed correctly, it becomes more reliable, but there’s still a way of getting it right and that one needs to figure out for themselves.

Compared to simpler scales, this is a more deliberate process. It takes longer and requires more consistency from the user.

Accuracy and consistency

Once readings are captured, the data itself is largely reliable. Body fat percentage, BMI, and other core metrics align closely with competing devices. Trends over time also make sense, reflecting expected changes based on daily activity and diet.

However, weight readings show minor fluctuations. Even back-to-back measurements can differ slightly by a few decimal points. While this does not significantly impact long-term tracking, it does stand out during short-term comparisons.

The scale is sensitive — it can detect small weight differences, even from holding a phone — but that sensitivity also introduces variability and that shows how accurate it can be when it comes to delivering the readings.

The inclusion of ECG functionality adds another layer to the device. It requires an initial approval process before activation and provides heart rhythm insights during regular weigh-ins.

It’s important to note that this is not a diagnostic tool. It cannot detect heart attacks, but it adds a layer of monitoring that goes beyond traditional fitness tracking.

Similarly, electrodermal activity and vascular age measurements expand the scope of what the scale attempts to measure. These features position the Body Scan as a broader health device rather than just a fitness tool.

Whether users actively rely on these metrics will vary, but their presence is what sets the device apart.

The app experience

If the hardware is ambitious, the app is where the experience becomes a little more demanding.

The Withings app contains all the data you need, but it doesn’t present it in a way that is easy to navigate. There is no single dashboard where all metrics are clearly visible. Instead, data is divided into categories like body composition, ECG, heart rate, and more.

Accessing specific numbers often requires multiple taps. In many cases, you see trends first, and only after interacting with graphs do you find exact values. This approach prioritises long-term patterns but makes quick checks less convenient.

Tutorials and guidance are also harder to revisit than expected. But, once you know where they are, then it becomes easier. Also, users have the option to create multiple profiles as well for tracking the health of different people at home.

The good part is that the profile can be changed with the leg pressure right on the scale.

Everyday practicality

Living with the Body Scan requires adjustment. It is not designed for quick, effortless use. It demands consistency, attention to detail, and time. However, if your goal is just to record your weight and not other aspects then it can do it instantly without any delays. But, you do not spend this much just for tracking weight.

The scale works best when treated as part of a routine rather than a casual check-in. When used consistently, it provides a detailed view of how the body changes over time.

Verdict

The Withings Body Scan redefines the smart scale by combining body composition with cardiovascular insights for a comprehensive health picture. It offers unique, reliable metrics but demands a more involved measurement process and has a functional app as well. If you are into fitness monitoring that goes beyond regular metrics like weight, then Withings Body Scan can be good option to go with.
