Google’s next big smartphone launch might come with a controversial twist. According to a new leak from well-known tipster Evan Blass, the upcoming Pixel 10 series could say goodbye to the physical SIM card tray, at least in the United States.
The leak claims that the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL will rely entirely on eSIM technology, offering two active eSIM slots instead of the familiar little tray we have been using for years. This would mean no more fiddling with SIM ejector pins, but also no quick SIM swaps when travelling. Interestingly, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Google’s next foldable, may still keep a SIM tray.
Blass suggested that this change might be limited to the US, meaning other regions could still get the traditional slot. However, Google has not confirmed anything yet.
It is worth noting that other leaks tell a different story. Early renders and even prototype photos of the Pixel 10 models have shown a SIM slot in place. However, most images did not clearly show the top edge of the device, leaving just enough mystery for speculation.
If the leak is accurate, Google would be following in Apple’s footsteps. Apple removed the SIM tray in US models of the iPhone 14 and 15. Going eSIM-only can free up space inside the phone, improve water resistance and make network switching easier for those comfortable managing it digitally.
Not everyone is excited about this possibility. Frequent travellers often prefer physical SIM cards because buying and using a local SIM abroad is quick and easy. eSIM setup can be slower, and transferring one to another phone can be tricky if your device is lost or damaged.
For now, it remains a rumour. Google could be testing eSIM-only models or planning a phased rollout in certain markets. With the Pixel 10 expected next year, more concrete evidence is likely to appear before launch.
Until then, US Pixel fans who love their SIM cards might want to prepare for a future without that tiny tray, although they may appreciate never having to search for a SIM ejector tool again.
