WhatsApp may get a username key feature to block spam calls: Here’s how it’ll work

WhatsApp might finally be taking a step away from phone numbers. The messaging app is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to find, message, and even call each other using usernames instead of mobile numbers. The update — spotted in the app’s beta version — could completely change how we connect on WhatsApp, making it a little more private and a lot more convenient.

No phone number needed

Currently, you need someone’s phone number to message or call them on WhatsApp. But with the upcoming username feature, you’ll be able to search for a person’s username and start a chat or call directly — much like what apps such as Signal or Telegram already allow.

According to WABetaInfo, traces of this feature were found in recent beta versions for both Android and iOS. Once rolled out, users will be able to go to the Calls tab, type in a username in the search bar, and if there’s a match, hit the voice or video call button. Depending on privacy settings, you may also see the person’s profile photo before calling.

Protecting users from spam calls

Of course, there’s always the risk of misuse when such features go public — random people could start spamming others with unwanted calls. To prevent this, WhatsApp is reportedly adding a safety layer called “username keys.”

Here’s how it would work: even if someone knows your username, they’ll need to enter the correct username key to be able to call you. This extra step acts like a lock, keeping your privacy intact and stopping scammers or bots from reaching you.

Part of a bigger privacy push

This username calling option is just one of several new privacy and convenience features WhatsApp has been working on lately. The app is also testing passkey protection for chat backups, cover photos, and better media filters — all designed to give users more control over their accounts.

There’s no official timeline yet for when username-based calling will roll out, but it’s currently being tested internally. Once ready, it’s expected to appear first for beta users before reaching everyone else.

If it works as planned, WhatsApp could soon make phone numbers optional — a small change that could make messaging a lot safer and simpler.
