WhatsApp is quietly testing two new AI-powered features that could make catching up on messages and composing replies a lot easier — especially if your chats are always buzzing.
The first feature, spotted by WABetaInfo, is AI message summarization. If you’ve missed a bunch of messages in a chat, group, or channel, WhatsApp may soon give you the option to summarize the entire thread using Meta AI. Instead of the usual “X unread messages” label, a “Summarize with Meta AI” button shows up. Tap it, and you’ll get a short, easy-to-read recap of what you missed.
This feature is still in beta testing on Android and is part of an opt-in system called Private Processing. WhatsApp says the summaries are generated in the cloud in a secure, isolated environment — no messages are stored or linked to users, and the summaries are deleted immediately after processing.
Even better, if you're chatting in a conversation with Advanced Privacy enabled, AI summaries won’t kick in at all. That means privacy and encryption stay intact, even with AI features active elsewhere.
The second feature in testing is called “Writing Help.” It’s designed to help users tweak the tone or clarity of their messages before sending them. Whether you want to sound more professional, polite, or casual, this tool would help you edit your message on the fly — again using the same privacy-first cloud processing setup.
For now, both features are available only to a limited number of users in the Android beta. No word yet on iOS support, language availability, or when it will roll out more widely.
If you're part of the Android beta program, you might start seeing these tools soon. Would you use AI to catch up on chats or polish your texts?
