WhatsApp has strong policies in place to prevent scams and fraudulent activities on the messaging platform. In the latest monthly report, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform has banned over 99 lakh accounts in India between January 1 to January 30. The report mentions that out of all the banned accounts, 13.27 lakh accounts were proactively banned before receiving any user reports.

In addition to proactive bans, WhatsApp received 9,474 grievance reports from users in India through its official grievance channels. However, only 239 accounts were actioned based on these complaints. Ban appeals constituted the highest number of reports (4,212), with 111 accounts reinstated after review.

Why WhatsApp has banned the accounts

According to the report, WhatsApp has banned these accounts for violating certain policies under Rule (1)(d) and Rule 3A(7) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

WhatsApp uses automated systems and user feedback to detect and take action against accounts violating its Terms of Service. The platform bans accounts for reasons including spam, misinformation, fraudulent activity, and abuse. The company’s detection operates at three levels: at registration, during messaging, and in response to user reports and blocks.

Actions that can lead to a ban

Sending unwanted or bulk messages. Automated or mass messaging is prohibited and can result in immediate suspension.

Sharing unauthorised contact lists. Adding people to groups without consent or using data from illicit sources violates WhatsApp’s policies.

Overusing broadcast lists. Frequent broadcast messages can trigger reports and bans.

Violating WhatsApp’s Terms of Service. Spreading false information, hate speech, or engaging in illegal activities can lead to a permanent ban.

Following these guidelines ensures uninterrupted access to WhatsApp while maintaining a safe and respectful communication environment.

How to protect your WhatsApp account from getting banned

In the official support page, WhatsApp has listed the best practices for using WhatsApp and avoid getting banned.

Message only known contacts and send messages only to people who have contacted you first or given permission. Unsolicited messages can lead to reports.

Seek permission before adding users to groups. Always get approval before adding someone to a WhatsApp group. If they leave, respect their choice.

Use group controls wisely. Group admins can restrict messaging to avoid spam and maintain order.

Be cautious with forwarded messages. WhatsApp labels forwarded messages to prevent misinformation. Share only verified information.
