WhatsApp users worldwide, including those in India and the United States, reported a widespread outage on February 28. Downdetector data indicates the outage began at approximately 8:45 PM IST and remains ongoing. Several users also took X to report the ongoing WhatsApp outage. Other Meta services like Facebook, Messenger, etc, also appear to be down at the time of writing this article.

Extent of the outage and problems users are facing
According to Downdetector, over 15,000 users globally reported difficulties accessing WhatsApp. The majority of complaints—79%—were related to the inability to send messages, while 18% faced server connection issues, and 7% reported app-related problems.

In India, users reported issues primarily with sending and receiving messages. A similar trend was observed in the United States and other countries, where thousands of users flagged connectivity problems. The outage resulted in slow message deliveries, failed transmissions, and login disruptions.

Current status
As of 9:15 PM IST, the service remains disrupted. Users continue to report issues with messaging and connectivity. Downdetector’s real-time data shows a sharp increase in complaints, indicating a widespread impact.

Moneycontrol also checked Meta’s official status page, which currently shows that every Meta service, including WhatsApp, is operating normally and has no issues.

Meta's response
As of now, Meta has not provided an official statement regarding the WhatsApp outage. The company has yet to confirm the cause or provide an estimated time for restoration.

Past incidents
This outage follows a series of disruptions affecting WhatsApp in recent months. In December 2024, WhatsApp services were down for nearly four hours, affecting millions globally. At the time, the company attributed the issue to a technical error and later restored services.
