WhatsApp is bringing its in-app translation tool to iPhone users, weeks after its debut on Android. The update, part of version 25.28.74, lets users instantly translate messages in 21 languages — a feature that could make global chats far smoother. Meta says the rollout will reach all users in the coming weeks, alongside support for Live Photos.
How it works
To check if you have the feature, press and hold any message, tap “More…,” and look for the “Translate” option. The first time you use it, you’ll select source and target languages and download language packs. Once installed, translations can work even without an internet connection.
Downloaded packs can be managed under Settings > Translate > Downloaded Languages. You can add or remove languages anytime.
Supported Languages
The app currently supports 21 languages, including Hindi, English (UK and US), French, German, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, and Korean, among others. However, WhatsApp notes that availability may depend on your iOS version.
What can and can’t be translated
While the tool works for most messages in individual and group chats, it won’t translate media such as documents, contacts, stickers, GIFs, or shared locations. Users will need a stable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection and sufficient storage space to download language packs.
Why it matters
For WhatsApp’s massive global audience, this feature could help break down language barriers and reduce reliance on third-party translation apps. It also reinforces Meta’s broader AI push across its messaging platforms — following recent additions like AI-powered message summaries and writing suggestions.
