Spotify introduces custom transitions for playlists

Spotify’s new transitions feature brings DJ-style mixing to playlists with fades, blends, and custom settings.

Spotify has rolled out a new feature that allows Premium subscribers to add custom transitions between tracks, giving playlists a more professional and personalised touch. The update, which launched this week, lets users either apply automatic transitions or experiment with preset styles such as fade, rise, or blend.

To start, users can open any playlist and tap the “Mix” option from the toolbar. From there, it is possible to experiment with different transition styles while adjusting settings for volume, equaliser, and effects. Spotify also displays waveform and beat data, making it easier to choose the precise moment when one track flows into the next. For newcomers, the app highlights useful information such as beats per minute and key signatures to simplify the process of mixing.

The streaming platform says this feature has been designed with both casual music fans and playlist enthusiasts in mind. To date, nearly nine billion playlists have been created on Spotify, and the addition of custom transitions could encourage users to take curation further. According to the company, genres such as house and techno work especially well, as they are often produced for seamless mixing.

The update also reflects Spotify’s broader push to give users greater control over how they listen. Over the past year, the company has added tools to edit playlists more easily, personalise Discover Weekly recommendations, snooze unwanted tracks, and even interact with its AI DJ. This new feature positions Spotify against Apple Music, which is preparing to launch its own AutoMix tool in the upcoming iOS 26 update. Apple’s feature promises automatic DJ-style mixing, but Spotify’s manual controls may appeal more to users who prefer hands-on customisation.

Once created, mixed playlists can be saved, shared on social media, or even co-edited with friends. Users can toggle the “Mix” feature on and off at any time, making it simple to switch between a continuous DJ-style set and a standard playlist. Playlists can also be customised further with unique cover art, stickers, and labels designed specifically for mixed playlists.

Spotify notes that the feature is being rolled out gradually to Premium subscribers worldwide, though some markets in the Asia-Pacific region will need to wait a little longer. The update is available on both iOS and Android for users running the latest version of the app.
