Spotify confirms Android app ‘problem’, here’s what you can do for now

The issue appears to be confined to certain Android models and specific Wi-Fi setups, but given Spotify’s acknowledgment, a software update addressing the bug is likely on the way soon.

Spotify has officially confirmed that some Android users are experiencing app freezes and crashes when connected to Wi-Fi. The company acknowledged the problem in a community post, noting that the issue primarily affects Samsung and Google Pixel devices. “We’ve received reports from Android users experiencing issues where the Spotify app becomes unresponsive, freezes, or crashes when connected to certain Wi-Fi networks. The issue doesn’t occur while using mobile data,” the statement read.

What’s happening

According to reports on Spotify’s community forums and Reddit, the issue typically occurs a few seconds after launching the app on Wi-Fi. Users describe the app opening briefly before freezing and then crashing entirely. The same users report that switching to mobile data or a different Wi-Fi network allows playback to resume normally, suggesting that the problem may be linked to specific router configurations or network setups.

The glitch has reportedly been affecting users for nearly two weeks, with most complaints coming from owners of Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones. Some users have speculated that the problem could be related to Chromecast-enabled devices on the same network, which may be causing conflicts in Spotify’s connection process.

Spotify’s engineering team is currently investigating the issue, but the company hasn’t shared a timeline for a fix. Standard troubleshooting steps such as clearing cache data, reinstalling the app, or restarting devices haven’t resolved the issue for most users.

Until a permanent fix rolls out, Spotify recommends a few temporary workarounds. Users can switch to mobile data while streaming or disable Wi-Fi altogether to avoid app crashes. Some users have also found success by reverting to an earlier version of the app from before the latest update.

The issue appears to be confined to certain Android models and specific Wi-Fi setups, but given Spotify’s acknowledgment, a software update addressing the bug is likely on the way soon.
