The PlayStation Portal was launched about two years ago as a device dedicated to remote play, requiring a connection from a PlayStation 5 to stream games from the console. This limitation means that the PS Portal acts as a second screen for your PlayStation 5 and cannot be used as an independent gaming console. Thankfully, Sony has finally released a new update for the handheld, which unlocks its true potential by adding the ability to stream PS5 games via its Cloud Gaming service directly to the PS Portal.
PlayStation Portal gains cloud streaming ability: Key details
With the addition of this new cloud gaming feature, PS Portal, with the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, can now access hundreds of titles without needing to own a PlayStation 5. This means that major titles like Grand Theft Auto V, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Resident Evil 4, Astro Bot, Ghost of Yōtei, Borderlands 4, and Fortnite can now be played directly on PS Portal through Sony’s cloud servers, eliminating the need to link a PS5 console.
Additionally, hundreds of games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, such as Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarok, Hogwarts Legacy, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered, will be playable directly on the PS Portal. Sony has also optimised the firmware to reduce input latency with improved DualSense haptic feedback over cloud sessions, ensuring smoother gameplay across different genres on the Portal.
This latest update for PS Portal includes additional features that improve the overall gaming experience of users. We also get a new PS Portal interface, divided into three main sections: Remote Play, Cloud Streaming, and Search. Cloud streaming also receives additional enhancements, where PS players can now access an in-game store while streaming, making it possible to purchase downloadable content or add-ons without switching devices.
