Sony has launched the FX2, the newest addition to its Cinema Line camera family, aimed squarely at indie filmmakers, small crews, and solo creators who want the look and feel of big-budget cinema without hauling a truckload of gear.
At its heart is a full-frame 33MP back-illuminated Exmor R sensor, offering over 15 stops of dynamic range with S-Log3, plus dual base ISOs at 800 and 4000 for strong performance in both day and night shoots. Sony has equipped it with broad codec support, including 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra formats, and the ability to record DCI 4K at 24p and 4K 60p for up to 13 hours continuously—thanks to a redesigned internal cooling system.
Slow-motion fans get up to 120 fps in Full HD, while Log shooting in Cine EI modes and support for 16 user LUTs allow for robust post-production workflows. There’s also a de-squeeze option for anamorphic lenses, and the ever-popular S-Cinetone profile comes set as default.
The FX2 is light, compact, and rig-ready with a flat-top cage-less design and multiple mounting points. A new top handle (sold in a bundle) adds more grip and pro audio ports, including dual XLR inputs and four-channel 24-bit audio. Autofocus sees a leap with Real-Time Recognition AF and subject detection that includes not just people but animals, vehicles, and even insects—plus tools like AF assist and breathing compensation for refined control.
Solo shooters benefit from new framing tools like Auto Framing and Framing Stabilizer, making the FX2 feel like a second camera operator. Still shooters aren’t left out either; the FX2 captures 33MP photos and now includes a dedicated log shooting mode for color grading in post.
The hardware is familiar but upgraded: a new 3.68M-dot electronic viewfinder with a deep eyecup is paired with a vari-angle LCD touchscreen. Custom buttons, vertical shooting modes, and an intuitive “BIG6” menu screen bring ease of use to a pro-grade package.
On the connectivity front, the FX2 features HDMI Type-A with 16-bit RAW output, USB-C with Power Delivery, dual-band Wi-Fi, wired LAN via adapter, and native streaming support—ideal for both remote production and content creators aiming for live broadcasts.
Shipping in early August, the FX2 is priced at $2,699.99 USD for the body only, or $3,099.99 with the XLR handle. It’s available via Sony and authorised dealers in North America.
