WhatsApp has been adding new features to emojis, GIFs, and stickers. Recently, the company announced that users can share a short portion – around 5 seconds – of any videos that are stored in their phone as looping GIFs directly through the app.

The feature is available on both Android and iOS platforms and if you are wondering how to convert a video into a GIF and share it with friends and family, here’s our step-by-step guide.

What is video-to-GIF feature on WhatsApp?

The feature is straightforward. It allows you to create personalised GIFs using videos that are stored on the phone. It can be a fun moment with friends or family. The feature lets users select a portion that’s 5 seconds or less and share it as a GIF in an individual or group chat.

What you’ll need

- A video that’s stored in the phone’s memory

- Latest version of WhatsApp

How to create GIFs from videos on Android

  1. Open WhatsApp and head to the chat window of the person or group in which you want to share the GIF.
  2. Next, tap on the “Pin” icon and select “Gallery”
  3. Select the video and then choose the five-second portion that you want to share
  4. Hit the “GIF” icon at the top
  5. Your GIF is ready. Hit the send button to share

How to create GIFs from videos on iPhones

The process is more or less the same as Android. However, the options are a little different. Also, on iPhones live photos can also be shared as GIFs.

  1. Head to chat window of the person or group
  2. Tap on the “Plus” icon
  3. Select “Photos or Video Library”
  4. Select the video file or a live photo
  5. Select the portion (5 seconds)
  6. Tap on “GIF” toggle and then hit the “Send” button
