Samsung introduced its first foldable smartphone nearly seven years ago, and the Korean technology giant is now gearing up for its first tri-fold smartphone, which could launch later this year. However, recent reports suggest that Samsung may not release the device globally, as the release might be limited to select markets like China and South Korea, leaving fans in other regions uncertain about its availability.

Samsung’s first triple-foldable smartphone spotted on GSM Association database: Key details

According to a report by Android Headlines, a new Samsung device with the model number SM-F968 has been spotted in the GSM Association (GSMA) database, which reveals that Samsung is internally calling the upcoming triple foldable smartphone ‘Q7M.’ Moreover, two variants of the phone have appeared in the database with codenames SM-F9680 and SM-968N.

Further, as per Samsung's naming tradition, the device's code with F968 signifies the market in which it will be launched. According to sources, the SM-F9680 model could be the Chinese version, while the SM-F968N variant may be for the South Korean market. Hence, Samsung’s first tri-foldable phone might not launch in other global regions, at least initially.

As for the launch timeline, the report adds that Samsung typically launches its products about six to seven months after its GSMA registration, so this model is expected to see a launch around October this year. Recent patent filings also provide clues about the possible design of this foldable smartphone. It could come with a dual-inner folding design, where the multiple screens would fold inward. In contrast, Huawei’s Mate XT, the world’s first tri-fold phone, folds in a zig-zag pattern.
