Samsung is reportedly preparing to end sales of its experimental Galaxy Z TriFold in South Korea on March 17, just three months after the device first went on sale. The report comes from South Korean publication Dong-A Ilbo, although Samsung has not officially confirmed the move. Engadget has reached out to the company for comment.
In the United States, where the device launched in January, the TriFold is expected to remain available until existing inventory is sold out. Priced at nearly $3,000 (roughly Rs 2.5 lakh), the Galaxy Z TriFold was never positioned as a mass-market product.
Samsung reportedly sold the device in limited batches through its website, with each drop selling out within minutes. Around 3,000 units were said to have been sold across the first two batches.
Notably, Samsung did not provide review units to the media, reinforcing the idea that the product was not aimed at broad consumer adoption.
A showcase, not a scale product
Industry sources cited by Dong-A Ilbo suggest the TriFold was designed primarily as a technology showcase rather than a revenue-generating device. The foldable highlights Samsung’s advances in display engineering and form factors, but high production costs appear to have limited its commercial viability.
Rising prices for components such as memory — including DRAM and NAND flash — have reportedly left little to no profit margin on the device.
Secondary market surge
Despite limited availability, demand for the TriFold remained high in certain circles. In South Korea, the device was reportedly resold at prices reaching nearly three times its retail value on the secondary market, reflecting its rarity and novelty. While the TriFold may not continue as a retail product, it signals where Samsung could be heading with future foldable designs — even if those ideas take time to become practical for mass adoption.
