Capcom is taking its iconic Resident Evil franchise in a new direction. The latest entry, Resident Evil: Survival Unit, is now available for pre-order on the App Store and Google Play, ahead of its official launch on December 31, 2025.
Announced on July 10, Survival Unit offers a dramatic shift from the franchise’s usual third-person or first-person shooter gameplay. This time, it’s a full-fledged strategy game — the first of its kind in Resident Evil’s 30-year history.
The game is set between the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, but Capcom emphasises that it tells a parallel story rather than a direct continuation. According to Capcom producer Masachika Kawata, Survival Unit has been developed with close attention to the franchise’s legacy, while offering a fresh gameplay experience.
Players will control a roster of classic Resident Evil characters, including Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, Carlos Oliveira, and Marvin Branagh, managing resources and tactics in order to survive. The strategic layer adds a twist to the traditional survival horror experience — think squad management and decision-making under pressure, not just guns blazing.
Executive producer Shinji Hashimoto says the aim is to fuse Resident Evil’s survival horror DNA with the mechanics of a tactical game, creating a “new perspective” for fans of the franchise.
Although the App Store listing shows a December 2025 release date, that’s likely a placeholder. Capcom hasn’t confirmed an exact date, but the pre-order window is now open for mobile players.
More details, including gameplay footage and storyline teasers, are available on the game’s official website, launched alongside a YouTube livestream that aired on July 11.
