Pokémon Go just got a new owner. Scopely, the company behind Monopoly Go and Stumble Guys, just bought Niantic’s gaming business. Niantic is the popular gaming company behind Pokémon Go. And it cost them a whopping $3.5 billion.
With this deal, Scopely now owns Pikmin Bloom and Monster Hunter, along with apps like Campfire and Wayfarer. That means more games under their name and a bigger presence in mobile gaming.
If you haven’t heard much about Scopely, they’ve been around since 2011, making games like Marvel Strike Force, Star Trek Fleet Command, WWE Champions, and Scrabble Go. They’re now backed by Saudi Arabia’s wealth fund, which is putting a lot of money—about $38 billion—into gaming.
As for Niantic, things haven’t been great for them lately. Pokémon Go was a massive success, but they struggled to create another hit. They had to lay off employees in 2022 and 2023, and they even shut down Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. So, selling their gaming division seems like a way for them to regroup.
This deal also comes as Saudi Arabia is trying to become a big name in gaming. They’re even hosting the Esports World Cup this year.
