Apple has restructured its iPhone lineup with the launch of the iPhone 17 series, ending the run of the “Plus” model and introducing the iPhone 17 Air in its place. The move marks a significant shift in strategy, aimed at streamlining choices for customers while introducing a slimmer design option.

Plus model phased out

The Plus variant, first seen with the iPhone 6 Plus in 2014, was created to offer a larger display without requiring buyers to opt for the Pro Max. However, sales performance across recent generations—including the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 16 Plus—has not matched the success of the standard and Pro models. Analysts attribute this to pricing overlap and limited differentiation, which reduced its long-term appeal.

By retiring the Plus, Apple is consolidating its range to better align with consumer demand for compact but capable smartphones.

iPhone Air introduced

Taking its place is the iPhone 17 Air, which Apple is positioning as a lighter yet powerful option. Built from titanium, the device balances durability with portability. It debuts with Ceramic Shield 2 for added screen protection and a slim profile that makes it the thinnest iPhone in the current lineup.

The Air comes with a 6.5-inch ProMotion display featuring smoother scrolling, always-on functionality, and brightness improvements. This screen size situates it between the iPhone 17’s 6.1-inch panel and the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s 6.9-inch display, giving buyers a middle-ground option.

Power and performance

At its core, the iPhone Air runs on the A19 Pro chip, designed on a 2nm process to enhance performance and efficiency. Apple has also added the new N1 chip for faster Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, alongside a C1X modem that is both quicker and more power-efficient than its predecessor.

The iPhone 17 Air features a 48MP Fusion camera system, delivering 24MP default images and supporting multiple focal lengths. It introduces new features such as dual-capture video, enabling users to record from the front and rear cameras at the same time. A Center Stage-enabled front camera ensures better framing during video calls.

Battery life is rated for all-day use, and with the addition of a new low-profile MagSafe battery pack, playback can extend up to 40 hours. Accessories at launch include translucent cases, lightweight bumpers, a Crossbody Strap, and the MagSafe pack.

With this change, Apple has closed the chapter on the Plus and added the Air, reshaping what a non-Pro iPhone represents in 2025.
