Sony has started rolling out a new PlayStation 5 system software update that brings several new features and changes to the gaming console. The feature list includes audio enhancements and also marks the return of classic console-inspired UI themes.
Sony PlayStation 5 update: Rollout details
Sony, in the official blog post, has mentioned that the update will be rolled out in a phased manner starting today (April 24, 2025). This means, users will receive the update gradually based on the region they are in over the coming weeks.
Sony PlayStation 5 update: What's new
As mentioned, with the update, Sony is adding several new features. Here's a complete list of new features that the gaming console is getting as a part of the update.
Audio focus improves in-game clarity
One of the headline features in this update is the new “Audio Focus” setting. It aims to improve player immersion by allowing users to boost specific sound frequencies during gameplay. Accessible via [Settings] > [Sound] > [Volume] > [Audio Focus] or directly through the Control Center, the tool lets players customize audio presets to suit their preferences while using headphones connected via USB or analogue jack.
Players can choose from four focus types:
- Boost Low Pitch (enhancing bass-heavy sounds like engines)- Boost Voices (improving clarity in dialogue and voice chats)
- Boost High Pitch (highlighting sounds like footsteps and rustling)
- Boost Quiet Sounds (amplifying softer ambient audio across the frequency range)
Each preset comes with three intensity options — Weak, Medium, and Strong — and can be adjusted independently for the left and right channels. However, the feature is not supported over HDMI connections, including TVs, AV receivers, or soundbars.
Return of classic PlayStation themes
In addition to the audio enhancements, Sony has reinstated its nostalgic “Appearance” feature, first introduced during PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebrations. The update allows users to customise their PS5 home screen with visual themes inspired by previous PlayStation generations — the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4.
These themes are designed to replicate the look and feel of earlier console interfaces, offering a visual throwback for long-time fans. The customisation option can be accessed via the Appearance section in the Settings menu.
