Pixelmator Pro has officially launched on iPad, marking a long-awaited expansion of one of the most popular creative apps in the Apple ecosystem. The release coincides with the debut of Apple Creator Studio, a new subscription bundle that now serves as the exclusive way to access Pixelmator Pro on iPad.
The Mac version of Pixelmator Pro remains available as a standalone purchase, but the iPad release is locked behind the Creator Studio subscription. For longtime users, this is a notable shift in strategy, especially as the original Pixelmator app for iPad has effectively been left behind and is no longer receiving updates.
Early impressions suggest that Pixelmator Pro on iPad has been carefully adapted rather than simply ported. The app feels purpose-built for iPadOS 26, embracing its marquee features with a flexible interface that resizes cleanly across different window configurations. The Liquid Glass design language is present throughout, and the app integrates comfortably with the system menu bar, making it feel closer to a desktop-class creative tool than a typical tablet app.
Keyboard shortcuts are well supported, which immediately makes Pixelmator Pro more appealing for users who treat the iPad as a laptop replacement. Performance feels responsive, and the interface strikes a good balance between touch-first design and precision control.
Apple Pencil support is one of the strongest aspects of the iPad release. Pixelmator Pro fully supports hover, squeeze, double-tap, and palm rejection, allowing for pixel-perfect design, painting, and illustration workflows. The experience feels natural and fluid, particularly when sketching, painting, or working with vector paths.
One of the standout additions on iPad is the new Warp tool. This feature allows users to twist and bend images, shapes, text, and even video layers by manipulating points on a warp grid. For quicker results, there are 12 smart warp presets, including shapes like arcs, cylinders, and flags, along with configurable grid layouts such as 3×3, 4×4, and 5×5. The tool is complemented by new premium mockups, designed to showcase artwork on products like t-shirts and mugs.
Beyond new tools, Pixelmator Pro on iPad brings over the full creative scope of the desktop app. Users can edit photos and videos with pro-grade colour adjustments, apply machine learning-powered features such as background removal and resolution enhancement, and work with over 40 colour presets and more than 70 effects. RAW photo support extends to files from over 750 popular cameras, reinforcing the app’s professional ambitions.
Designers and illustrators are equally well served. The app supports layer-based editing with vector shapes, typography, video layers, and advanced layer styles. Vector tools such as the Pen and Freeform Pen are available, alongside Smart Shapes and extensive shape libraries. Painters benefit from a fast Metal-powered engine, dual-texture brushes, and full pressure and tilt sensitivity.
File compatibility is broad, covering everything from PSD, SVG, and PDF to modern formats like AVIF, WebP, HDR images, and video files including MP4 and MOV. Projects can be roundtripped between iPad and Mac via cloud syncing, making it easy to pick up work across devices.
While the app itself is impressive, the lack of a standalone purchase or independent subscription option may frustrate some users. Pixelmator Pro on iPad feels like a natural fit for creative professionals and enthusiasts alike, but tying it exclusively to Apple Creator Studio makes it harder to recommend universally.
Still, from a technical and design perspective, Pixelmator Pro’s iPad debut is a strong statement. It shows how far iPad creative software has come, and how seriously Apple and its partners are treating the platform.
