OTEK Galaxy Smart Projector review: A decent choice

Projectors have steadily moved from being niche office equipment to becoming a viable alternative to televisions at home. With the right balance of display quality, connectivity, and smart features, they can turn a living room into a theatre or make presentations more engaging in classrooms and offices. The OTEK Galaxy Smart Projector is positioned exactly in this space — a product that promises large-screen entertainment with the convenience of built-in apps and modern wireless standards, all while keeping the setup simple. Priced at Rs 15,990, it enters a competitive segment where users expect both performance and practicality. Over the past few weeks, I’ve explored how it holds up in real-world use, and the experience comes down to eight key aspects that define its strengths and limitations.

Design and build The OTEK Galaxy Smart Projector arrives in a compact, white body that looks ready to fit into almost any home or office environment. Its design doesn’t draw attention to itself, which works in its favour if you plan to keep it mounted in a living room or a conference setup. The dust-free body is one of its standout aspects. Projectors often suffer from dust accumulation, leading to reduced clarity and frequent cleaning needs. While not heavy, the projector feels sturdy enough for everyday use. The bundled remote is straightforward, though like many projectors, it could have benefited from backlighting for dark-room operation. Also, there’s a dedicated dust filter that can be cleaned manually.

Display quality and 4K support At its core, this projector delivers a native 1080p resolution, which is good for everyday use, whether you’re watching movies, streaming shows, or giving presentations. But it also supports playback up to 4K resolution (3840 x 2160), which means you can feed it high-resolution content and get sharp results on large displays. The projection size extends up to 250 inches, making it versatile for both small bedrooms and larger halls. While the claims are big, the quality at the maximum suffers with soft edges and overall focus loss that makes it impossible to consume content. But, if you are okay with making the projection size compromise – at around 100 inch – the Galaxy smart projector does a decent job with relatively crisp images and text. Also, it is a 1080p projector that can play 4K videos, just don’t expect true 4K sharpness as it relies on processing to upscale content. For most users, though, this won’t be a dealbreaker, especially given the immersive scale it provides.

Wireless connectivity and streaming Connectivity is a strong point for the OTEK Galaxy Smart Projector. It supports Wi-Fi 6 on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, ensuring smoother streaming with less buffering. Bluetooth 5.0 adds another layer of flexibility, whether you want to pair it with wireless headphones or external speakers. For wired connections, HDMI, USB, and AV ports are available, and HDMI ARC support is a nice addition for those who want to route audio through a soundbar or home theatre system. Screen mirroring works reliably across Android and iOS devices, making it useful for quick presentations or sharing content from a phone. In practice, Wi-Fi performance is solid, though the quality of mirroring still depends on your network stability.

Smart features and ease of setup Where the OTEK Galaxy Smart Projector really tries to differentiate itself is in setup convenience. Features like auto focus, auto keystone correction, auto screen fit, and obstacle avoidance aim to eliminate the usual frustrations of projector alignment. In testing, autofocus quickly sharpens the image, while keystone correction keeps the projection rectangular even if the device isn’t perfectly centred. Obstacle avoidance is a thoughtful addition, automatically adjusting the projection to avoid interruptions like wall hangings. While all these features work as expected, the time it takes is a little more than what I was expecting. Again, this is something that most people won’t mind at this price point. That said, I have also seen a couple of other projectors at this price point which gets the job done relatively quicker. Powered by Android 13, the software interface feels modern, though occasional stutters can happen when running multiple apps. With 2GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage, it handles most OTT apps well. Do keep in mind that the projector comes with Google Play Store with third-party app support, but the Netflix app that comes pre-installed with it is the mobile version which limits the functionality overall and similar is the case with Prime Video app.

Playback via USB I tried playing some movies and sound via a USB drive and no matter what I tried, the projector kept returning the audio playback issue. While the same content was working on other devices. But, no audio issues are present with the native apps that come with the projector like Netflix, YouTube, etc.

Brightness and audio performance Rated at 10,000 lumens, the projector delivers enough brightness for comfortable indoor use, especially in dimly lit rooms. In darker environments, the visuals are immersive and crisp. However, like most projectors in this category, brightness struggles to overcome direct daylight. For best results, curtains or a projection screen are almost mandatory. Audio is handled by inbuilt 5W speakers. They’re just bad – get a Bluetooth speaker for a better experience.

Verdict The OTEK Galaxy Smart Projector brings a long list of features at Rs 15,990, but the real-world experience is a mix of strengths and compromises. It does well in delivering a large-screen experience with decent 1080p quality at moderate projection sizes, stable Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, and useful auto-alignment tools that simplify setup. However, its performance falters when pushed — edges soften at larger screen sizes, brightness isn’t strong enough for daylight viewing, the bundled speakers don’t meet even casual expectations, and app limitations, particularly with Netflix and Prime Video, are hard to ignore. For first-time buyers who want an affordable entry into projection for movies, presentations, or occasional gaming, it makes sense if you pair it with an external speaker and keep the room conditions controlled. But if you are looking for a projector that can replace a television or provide a fully polished smart experience, you’ll need to spend more. The OTEK Galaxy Smart Projector is a decent choice, but only if you’re aware of its limitations.
