OpenAI has announced plans to acquire Promptfoo, an AI security platform focused on testing and evaluating artificial intelligence systems. The company said the acquisition will help strengthen security, testing, and governance capabilities for enterprises building AI systems using its Frontier platform.
The deal will integrate Promptfoo’s technology into OpenAI Frontier, a platform designed for building and operating AI coworkers within enterprise workflows.
Focus on AI security and evaluation
As organisations increasingly deploy AI agents into real business processes, testing and monitoring their behaviour has become a core requirement. OpenAI said enterprises need structured tools to test AI systems, identify risks before deployment, and maintain records for compliance and oversight.
Promptfoo provides tools that allow developers to evaluate large language model applications and conduct security testing. These tools can simulate attacks or misuse scenarios such as prompt injection, jailbreak attempts, data leaks, and unintended tool usage.
Once integrated into Frontier, these capabilities will become part of the development workflow, allowing enterprises to test agent behaviour earlier in the deployment process.
According to OpenAI, Promptfoo’s tools will help organisations build more secure and accountable AI systems. The platform supports automated testing and red-teaming of AI applications, enabling developers to detect vulnerabilities before they affect real users.
The integration will also provide reporting and traceability features. These tools will allow companies to track changes in AI behaviour, document testing outcomes, and maintain records needed for governance and compliance.
OpenAI said these capabilities will help enterprises manage risk while deploying AI agents across internal systems, customer support tools, and operational workflows.
Promptfoo was founded by Ian Webster and Michael D’Angelo and has built tools used by more than 25 percent of Fortune 500 companies. The platform also maintains an open-source command-line interface and library widely used by developers to evaluate large language model applications.
OpenAI said the open-source Promptfoo project will continue to be supported while the company expands enterprise capabilities through Frontier.
The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to further expand OpenAI’s focus on building secure and accountable AI systems for enterprise use.
