OpenAI may be preparing to enter the consumer hardware space with a product called “Dime,” according to a recent leak shared by tech commentator Mark Kretschmann. The post points to a patent filing that appears to confirm the name and hints that a public reveal could be approaching.
While OpenAI has not officially announced any hardware product, the filing has fuelled speculation that the company’s long-rumoured AI device is moving closer to launch.
Patent leak hints at ‘Dime’ branding
The leak suggests OpenAI has formally registered “Dime” as part of its hardware plans, a step typically taken when companies prepare for commercial products. Although the patent does not reveal detailed hardware designs, it strengthens earlier reports that OpenAI is building a physical device to complement its AI software ecosystem.
Branding appearing at this stage often indicates that internal development has progressed beyond early experimentation.
It looks like OpenAI’s first hardware product is getting a name: "Dime."Recent leaks point to a patent filing by @OpenAI that confirms the name and suggests a reveal is coming soon. High-end wearable reportedly on hold
Earlier rumours had suggested OpenAI was working on a more ambitious wearable device with smartphone-level hardware, designed to offer deep AI interaction without relying heavily on a phone.
However, the leak claims those plans may now be paused.
Rising memory and component costs — driven in part by the ongoing AI boom — are reportedly making such a premium device expensive to produce at scale. As a result, OpenAI is said to be shifting toward a simpler first product.
Instead of a complex wearable, OpenAI may introduce audio-focused earbuds as its hardware debut. These would likely centre around voice interaction, real-time AI assistance, and hands-free access to OpenAI’s models.
The streamlined approach could help the company enter the market faster while keeping manufacturing costs under control. Reports suggest the earbuds could arrive sometime in 2026, with the more advanced wearable potentially returning once component prices stabilise.
For now, OpenAI has not confirmed the leak. Still, the appearance of patent filings suggests the company’s long-anticipated hardware ambitions may finally be taking concrete shape.
