OpenAI is looking to clean up its increasingly crowded product lineup by rolling three of its key offerings into one unified desktop experience.

The company plans to combine its browser, the ChatGPT app, and its coding-focused Codex into what’s effectively being positioned as a “super app.” The move is meant to reduce fragmentation and make it easier for users to move between tasks without juggling multiple tools.

Leading the effort is Fidji Simo, who heads OpenAI’s applications business, with support from president Greg Brockman. Simo has been pushing for tighter product focus since joining the company, and this looks like a direct extension of that approach.

In a post on X, Simo framed the shift as part of a natural cycle for companies—experiment widely, then double down on what works. In this case, tools like Codex and ChatGPT are clearly where OpenAI sees momentum building.

The timing isn’t accidental. Over the past year, OpenAI has shipped a steady stream of products, from new model updates to standalone apps and experimental tools. That pace helped it stay ahead in the AI race, but it also left users navigating a slightly messy ecosystem.

Bringing everything under one roof could make the experience feel more cohesive—especially for users leaning on AI for work. The company has been increasingly vocal about focusing on “high-productivity” use cases, which suggests this app won’t just be about chatting with an AI, but actually getting things done—writing, coding, researching, and possibly even browsing, all in one place.

There’s also a bigger picture here. OpenAI is reportedly gearing up for a potential IPO, and a clearer, more streamlined product story is easier to sell than a scattered collection of apps and experiments.

Competition is only getting tighter. Google is pushing its Gemini ecosystem across devices, while Anthropic continues to gain traction with Claude. In that context, simplifying the user experience isn’t just good design—it’s a competitive move.

If executed well, this “super app” could become the default interface for how a lot of people interact with AI day-to-day.
