OpenAI launches GPT-5 for everyone: Who can use it, how long it lasts, and what changes for free and paid users

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, its most advanced AI model yet and the best part is that it is available to everyone, including free users. But there’s still some confusion around who exactly gets access, for how long, and what the limits are. Don’t worry, we’ve broken it down into five simple questions and answers to help you understand what’s going on.

1. Who can use GPT-5 right now?

As of now, GPT-5 is available to free, Pro, and Team users of ChatGPT. If you're using the free version of ChatGPT, you’ll automatically start with GPT-5 for a limited number of messages per day. Once you hit your limit, it will switch to a lighter version called GPT-5 Mini, which is still smarter than older models.

2. What do Pro users get that's different?

Pro users get unlimited access to GPT-5. Not only that, but they also get GPT-5 Pro, a version with “extended thinking,” meaning it gives more detailed and thoughtful answers—especially useful for complex tasks like coding, writing, or research.

3. Will GPT-5 be available to businesses and schools?

Yes! Starting next week, Enterprise, Team, and Education (EDU) users will also get access to GPT-5. These users will benefit from higher usage limits, better reliability, and full access to tools like file uploads, code analysis, image generation, and more.

4. How long can free users use GPT-5 each day?

OpenAI hasn’t shared an exact number of messages or time limits for free users. However, once you reach your daily GPT-5 cap, you’ll be automatically switched to GPT-5 Mini. This version still offers great performance and is better than GPT-4, but with slightly fewer capabilities than full GPT-5.

5. What happens after hitting the free limit?

You’ll still be able to chat using GPT-5 Mini, which is designed to give free users a smooth experience even after reaching their daily limit. If you want uninterrupted access to full GPT-5, you’ll need to upgrade to the Pro plan, which comes with higher limits and more advanced features.

OpenAI is bringing its smartest AI model to more people than ever. Whether you’re using it for free or through a subscription, GPT-5 is set to change the way we work, learn, and create.  If you want to unlock GPT-5 with no limits, a Pro subscription might be worth it. But even if you’re sticking with the free version, you’re still getting access to one of the most powerful AI tools ever built.
