OpenAI has unveiled GPT-4.1, its latest flagship AI model, introducing significant advancements in coding capabilities, long-context comprehension, and instruction following. GPT-4.1 is available in three versions: the standard GPT-4.1, a cost-efficient Mini, and a lightweight Nano, which is the smallest, fastest, and most affordable model to date.
Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, in a post on social media platform X said, “These models are great at coding, instruction following, and long context (1 million tokens). Benchmarks are strong, but we focused on real-world utility, and developers seem very happy.”
What’s new with GPT 4.1 models? One of the standout features of GPT-4.1 is its expanded context window, supporting up to one million tokens—substantially more than the 128,000-token limit of its predecessor, GPT-4o. This enhancement allows the model to process and understand larger datasets, making it particularly effective for complex tasks such as analyzing extensive codebases or lengthy documents .
In addition to its improved context handling, GPT-4.1 demonstrates notable gains in coding performance, with a 21% improvement over GPT-4o and a 27% increase compared to GPT-4.5, said OpenAI in a blog post.
The introduction of GPT-4.1 also marks a strategic shift for OpenAI, as the company plans to phase out older models. GPT-4 will be retired from ChatGPT by April 30, and the GPT-4.5 Preview will be deprecated by July 14, aligning with OpenAI’s focus on more advanced and cost-effective models .
Earlier, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the challenges in developing GPT-5, noting that its launch has been delayed to ensure seamless integration of new features. Meanwhile, the company is also preparing to release other models, including full and mini versions of its new o3 and o4 reasoning models .
“Close collaboration and partnership with the developer community enabled us to optimise these models for the tasks that matter most to their application,” said OpenAI in a blog post.
